RISO COME HIGHLY RECOMMENDED…

“Our business needs the printer to be quick and reliable and the RISO is both of these things.”

Wardhaman Banawane
Production Manager

The Background

In Japan, Kosei Pharmaceuticals has built a reputation for being the pharmaceutical wholesaler of choice, supplying thousands of pharmacies, doctors,
dentists and hospitals across the country.

Its UK arm was launched in 2010 in Slough and, since opening, it has recorded impressive growth figures that show no sign of abating.

In fact, it has expanded its premises, now employs around 170 people and is well on its way of achieving its aim of being the market leader in the pharmaceutical supply chain.

The Situation

Kosei offers an extensive range of parallel imports, generics, contract labelling and additional products.

Much of what it imports has to have new, English language labels put on to the boxes. Similarly, information leaflets that are folded up into the boxes need to be translated, printed, and folded to be inserted into the packaging.

In busy but well-organised offices, the team of staff, with their lab coats on, work hard to get the medicines ready to dispatch. It has to be right; there is little room for error when it comes to products that help people who are poorly.

So, with thousands of products being sorted every day, just how does Kosei manage to print the right documentation quickly and efficiently?

The Benefits

Production manager Wardhaman Banawane said: “The RISOs are reliable and work hard and we have received excellent service from the RISO team when we have needed it.

“Our business needs the printer to be quick and reliable and the RISO is both of these things.”

“Our staff like using the RISOs as the machines are very easy to use.”

The benefits of using the RISO solutions are many. The Kosei team are able to do their jobs quickly and efficiently. The machines are perfect for the tasks at hand.

For Kosei, it’s not about glossy materials, or flashy posters. It’s about utilising the right machines for the task. It’s about a key business in the pharmaceutical supply chain being able to rely on speed and efficiency because that’s what their business demands.

Reliable, efficient, and compact RISO devices are ideal for the task that Kosei need them to do, day in, day out. Maybe it’s time you prescribed RISO so that your company can become as efficient as Kosei.

The Solution

Kosei utilises the power of RISO digital inkjet solutions. In their offices are two RISO ComColors. Both are capable of printing hundreds of documents, at record-breaking speeds.

In fact, with the two machines working in tandem, they are often used to print out between 10,000 and 20,000 documents a day – each.

From 8.30am to 10.30pm, printing goes on throughout the working day.

The RISOs are real workhorses and it’s clear that the RISOs are valued and trusted members of the team. Kosei also has a RISO duplicator too, which can be called into action if needed.

RISO COME HIGHLY RECOMMENDED…

“I’d definitely recommend RISO. It’s a superb piece of kit for people who need high-volume printing.”

Steve Sidey
The Printing Services Manager

The Background

The Printing Services Department at Queen Elizabeth Hospital is located in a separate building to the main hospital building but handles print requirements from around the site. From leaflets to posters and forms, the print team gets thousands of requests each day from departments that each have their own budget. The majority of print request have been for forms that are used to note the patient details for use by the medical teams. Quite literally, thousands of documents have been printed on a daily basis.

The Profile

And he adds: “At 120ppm, the speed of the ComColor is amazing. Some days, depending on the demands, the duplicators churn out around 30,000 prints, and the ComColor has been printing around 10,000 a day. For people who need printers to be fast, reliable and cost-effective, RISO is a good choice.”

The Story

The print team has also seen a rise in the demand for colour printing. When they were having problems with doctors and nurses not filling in forms they found that documents in colour were more likely to be filled in, and filled in correctly.

Also, as there are a number of overseas workers coming into the hospital where English is not a first language, there is an increased demand for colour resources to aid communication.

Equipment purchases are made by the Procurement Department and are guided by Steve Sidey, the Printing Services Manager, and what his specific requirements are.

With a need for high-volume printing, on suitable paper, a RISO ComColor and digital duplicators from CAMRI, their local experienced RISO dealer, were chosen.

Steve says: “Duplicators are incredible. They are very reliable machines so we moved away from the litho printers that we had been using.”

“We saw that efficiency, work stream improvements, reliability and cost savings were all the benefits of using RISO.”

Comment from RISO

There are few sectors where getting communications right at a cost effective price is as important as it is in the health environment, particularly a busy hospital. That’s why RISO is the right solution for the medical sector. This case shows just why the right printer is the right medicine for organisations such as hospitals and healthcare facilities that need high-volume printing

Before ComColor

The Print Department at the hospital had been using an array of different printers, including litho. The demands on the team were getting so that the devices needed to change. There was also a requirement for colour too.

After ComColor

Steve has seen the benefit of the RISO speed, and the ability of the duplicators and the ComColors to get through the high volumes with little fuss.

Steve had also noted the real benefit of being able to provide a service whereby a request could be made for print materials, and they would be ready for when by the time a member of staff had walked the 200 metres between buildings.

As the move towards more colour became a necessity, the RISO helped because it would have proved too costly to continue with the old printers

"We had been spending a staggering £2,000 a month on printing. Now, we spend about £1,900 a quarter. That’s a huge difference, we now save about £25,580 a year.”

Cheryl Wason
School Business Manager, Thomas Buxton Primary School

The Background

We had four printers in our school but we were starting to have serious problems. The machines were old and needed new parts that we were going to be charged for. And the colour printing was expensive, at 7p a copy it was too much. The printers were also not being used how we wanted to use them.

The Profile

This is a two-form community primary school with a nursery situated in the heart of Whitechapel, a multi-cultural part of London.

It is maintained by the London Borough of Tower Hamlets and currently has around 460 pupils.

The single-storey school has recently been refurbished, which it says reflects “the high expectations of both children and staff”.

The Story

We were having battles with the suppliers about how much they were charging us for the new parts for the machines that we couldn’t actually use as they often broke down. And they rolled the contracts on and on and there we were, stuck with old machines we didn’t use to their potential. It wasn’t just the parts though; colour was expensive at 7p per copy on one particular machine. It was a crazy situation we were in.

At the time, there was a lot of talk in the press about how much schools were paying for all sorts of things and the sheer impact that growing costs were having. Many other schools were having the same problems as us. We weren’t alone and it was a topic of discussion for a time. After RISO was recommended by another school, and RISO also got in touch directly, we had the conversation and we realised that there was a way out of the situation we were in.

We didn’t have to keep doing what we had been.

It is fair to say that we love our two RISO ComColor 7150s. We still use paper in the school for creating beautiful displays on the walls, to homework, class work, newsletters and information for governors.

We have a weekly newsletter and it had been the case that if we had two or more pupils from the same family, we would only send it to the eldest sibling, purely to keep costs down.

With the RISO though, we can just do it! We print 350 double-sided newsletters in colour every week because it is now so cheap to do it.

Everybody uses the RISO and they have their set limits but we are definitely printing more in colour than we used to. We don’t have to worry too much now.

When we audited what we had been doing, we knew we had been spending a staggering £2,000 a month on printing. That’s an enormous chunk of the budget and it simply wasn’t sustainable. Something had to change. Now, we spend about £1,900 a quarter. That’s a huge difference, we now save about £25,580 a year. The sums add up right now.

The admin team find the RISO is easy to use and so do other people when they have had the training on how to do it.

Comment from RISO

Like every school, Thomas Buxton has to ensure that budgets are adhered to. Staff recognised that the original equipment needed to be changed and they needed reliable printers to maintain the printing output and in fact do more, particularly in colour. We are delighted to have been able to work with and provide an ideal solution to Thomas Buxton.

Before ComColor

The school used to have four printers from a variety of suppliers. But staff recognised that although the old machines were doing their job, it was expensive to print in colour, at 7p a sheet, and parts needed to be replaced – at extra cost. Machines were jamming, there was no unified system, colour was expensive and printing was a laborious task.

After ComColor

The school now has two RISO ComColor devices. Where it was spending a lot of money on printing, it is now using cost-effective solutions. It’s no wonder then that the governors gave the go ahead to get RISO on board.

“The RISOs have saved us money. I have been able to reduce toner costs by about £10,000 a year.”

Phil Maddocks
Academy Systems Manager

Cecil Jones Academy 2

The Background

Print plays a major role in how schools communicate with people and also in the actual day-to-day education of pupils.

From letters home to parents and guardians, to exam papers and learning resources, printing is key to the smooth operation of a modern school.

At the heart of many learning environments is a trusted RISO printing solution; quietly, efficiently and cost- effectively working away amid the often frenetic school day.

Cecil Jones Academy in Southend has around 1,100 pupils and is a specialist business and enterprise academy.

Pupils are educated across two sites, and they are positively encouraged to aim high in their learning and commitment to achieving success.

The Challenge

With two sites, and almost 200 staff, the printing had to be co-ordinated and budgets adhered to.

The academy needed print solutions that could be reliably used to ensure staff could maintain excellent levels of effective communication and day-to-day teaching.

And, of course, all within tight budgets.

The RISO Print Management Solution combines the power of PaperCut print management system with the productivity and low costs of the ComColor as well as being compatible with many other devices.

“We have removed the vast majority of colour laser printers, which were expensive to refill. The RISO solution has saved us money. I have been able to reduce separate toner costs by about £10,000 a year.”

And Phil added: “The reliability is outstanding, and if we need RISO support we get it very quickly. I would recommend RISO to other people; in fact, I have done.”

Adrian Heafield, Director of Learning, is one staff member at the school who has access to printing using a RISO.

He says that previously, he just used photocopiers to print items such as displays, materials for parents, exam sheets and worksheets.

But the installation of the RISO machines means that he now has a reliable, robust printer

He said: “The RISOs are ideal, easy to use and just perfect for what we need.”

Adrian added: “They definitely seems to have saved a lot of money across the school. I would definitely recommend RISO.”

The Solution

The school now has a fleet of six RISO machines. Two are in one site, and four in the other.

The installation has proved to be a real success, for teachers, staff and, ultimately, pupils.

Cecil Jones Academy Systems Manager Phil Maddocks says that while a good deal of external communication is done by text message and email, print is still important and, indeed, critical for lessons. It is used alongside textbooks, for handouts, exam papers and worksheets.

Phil said: “We use the RISOs with swipe cards, the same ones that operate the door entry system, and we use the PaperCut print management software. It means you can make people stick to budgets and you can keep a cap on what is spent.”

Using the software, Phil can see that since the installation of the RISO solution two-and-a-half years ago, more than 7.3 million items have been printed.

The full installation of the PaperCut software enables a user to monitor, control and, if required, set user volume limitations.

“I wouldn’t recommend anything I’m not 100% totally satisfied with myself and I have already recommended it to many schools”

William Simmonds
Institute of School Business Leadership

The Client

ISBL – Institute of School Business Leadership (formerly known as NASBM – National Association of School Business Management) is the UK’s leading association working exclusively on behalf of the school business management profession.

Striving to constantly raise the standard of business management in schools, the association promotes continuous improvement and best practice.

Based in Rugby and serving a growing membership, “printing is at the heart of our communication”, explains Sushma Parmar, Business Manager, “with everything from conference handouts to training delegate packs, certificates, membership forms and invoices.”

The Challenge

“Before the arrival of our new ComColor, we used a typical toner based photocopier, but it was very slow especially on things like a mail merge and often there would be a queue for it on the lead up to a conference because of our work load.”

We instantly felt able to get the best out of our new RISO, but if we did have any further questions RISO were on hand to offer support and as
much follow up training as we needed.”

The speed, quality, reliability and flexibility of the RISO has made a big impact. Diane Gregory, Training Co-ordinator, explained that “in the production of training materials the online hole punching has made an incredible difference and has saved us hours already. It is also very reliable”

Sushma was also keen to point out that, “financially it’s been an excellent decision. Having had the ComColor for the last nine months, I would recommend the product to any school or business for a number of reasons. It’s fast, flexible and significantly increases productivity.

It’s much more environmentally friendly than a normal photocopier. It’s so easy to use and clean too as there is no toner. My experience with the ComColor is far better than any other photocopier or printer I have ever used.”

But the business case for the new RISO was clear cut” explains Sushma. “With the incredible speed, reliability and the extremely low full colour cost it has made a big impact on productivity.”

William Simmonds, Former Chief Executive says “in business, I wouldn’t recommend anything I am not 100% totally happy with myself and I have already recommended it to many schools. RISO’s print investigation approach and its association with

Investec means schools can benefit from this unique and eco-friendly technology. An investigative report highlights cost saving opportunities allied to approved operating leases.” In operation, the RISO at ISBL, fitted with the optional finishing unit can produce stapled and hole punched documents, including full finished booklets.

Julia Warmington, Conference Administrator says, “the whole process of changing over to RISO was seamless. The delivery and installation was arranged to cause minimal impact to our working day, and the comprehensive onsite user training was excellent.
